Why does dry skin age faster? What to do about it?

Before we get into what causes dry skin, let’s talk about how dry skin ages you.

Dry skin causes deeper cracks, creases, and dullness.  Properly hydrated skin allows for your natural oils, soft suppleness, and elasticity to work in your favor.  We love the word favor over here at Yuthful Skin, especially where the skin is concerned.

Here are a few causes of dry skin.  Double in fact, triple check this list as dry skin is a top cause for the appearance of aging showing faster than what’s natural.

1. Hydration –  As we always add that your body is always craving, water, rest, and nutrition.  Are you truly taking in the amount of water that your body and more specifically your skin is craving?

Since 2004 studies show that we need between 11- 15 cups of water per day.  A cup is 8 oz by the way.  https://www.nationalacademies.org/news/2004/02/report-sets-dietary-intake-levels-for-water-salt-and-potassium-to-maintain-health-and-reduce-chronic-disease-risk

2. Moisturizer – Are you topically applying a product that moisturizes and nourishes your skin for an extended period of time?  Many chemical-based moisturizers also contain alcohol-based ingredients.  So while temporarily moisturizing your face the alcohol is simultaneously drying your skin and robbing your face of moist nutrients.

3. Makeup ingredients – certain makeup brands deliver the color and performance that you need however may be dually drying your skin.  If you’re battling dry skin, we suggest researching your foundation and finishing powder ingredients.  Another good practice when considering switching foundations and powders is to go into the store and ask

4. Medications –  Some prescription drugs and even herbs can tend to pull moisture away from the body.  These are called diuretics.  An example of natural diuretics are: green and black tea, dandelion root, and hibiscus.  As far as Doctor prescribed medicine, be in the know of all your medication’s side effects.  If the side effects of your perscription(s) cause dry skin, perhaps discuss alternatives with your Physician,

5. Physical Health – Piggybacking on medications.  There may be some underlying issues and/or hormonal issues that need to be addressed with your Primary Care Physician or Certified Wholistic Practitioner.
